Return of the RT (April 25th 2008)

Finally collected the new bike from Motorrad Central this morning and although I’ve only covered the 10 mile ride home I already know that this is going to be a great bike for us!

It really is great to have another big BMW tourer in the garage again.

I now need to fit a few bits and pieces to the bike ahead of our first biking weekend away next week and already it’s in a hundred pieces all over the garage floor….

Hopefully it’ll be ready to test mid week before heading north next Saturday.

Sincere thanks to Graham, Tracy, Steve & Bruce at Motorrad Central in Dalkeith for the superb preparation of the bike & for making my return to motorcycling an enjoyable and memorable experience.

BMW Mobile Tradition….

As well as being a loyal & enthusiastic BMW bike owner/rider since 1982, I also have a great interest in BMW motorcycle history.

BMW themselves, through BMW Mobile Tradition, publish two of the best sources of historical information and data that I’ve come across.

As well as being a source of definitive model & production information the narrative is an informative and compelling read.

Published in two volumes, in either English or German, the Munich years from 1923-1969 and the Berlin years from 1969-1998, are available from your local BMW Motorrad dealership (to order) with BMW part numbers: 01 09 0 035 256 and 01 09 0 035 281 respectively for the English language versions.

BMW Profiles 1:
Motorcycles from Munich 1923-1969.

The launch of the first BMW motorcycle was celebrated in Berlin in 1923: the R 32 was developed in the record time of only five weeks and still became a technical sensation. The beginning of a brilliant era that has continued up to today.

This volume offers the first authorized and complete documentation. It includes all BMW motorcycles produced at the main Munich manufacturing facility: the entire development from 1923 to 1969 – including all stages spanning the drafting board, through the conveyor belt, to the race track. Pictures never published before and the reprint of an original motorcycle poster transport you into an exciting history. A data section provides comprehensive information.

108 pages, numerous illustrations, available in German and English.

BMW Profiles 4:
Motorcycles from Berlin 1969-1998.

BMW motorcycle production was transferred from Munich to the new Berlin plant in 1969. This relocation symbolized a profound change in image. A few years previously the motorcycle was the “cheap” alternative to the motorcar, a means of transport for the less well-heeled. Now, it became the very essence of a dream – boundless freedom on two wheels.

This book is a sequel to the first volume, and it includes all BMW motorcycles from the period between 1969 and 1998. Allow bike-appeal to sweep you off your feet. Volume 4 provides a complete description of the yearning for independence, and its realization on two wheels.

128 pages, numerous illustrations, available in German and English.

Not Long to Go Now….

Following a day long test ride back in February it was decided we should replace the departed R1200GS with another BMW tourer, the R1200RT-SE.

Recently arrived at my local BMW Motorrad dealer, Motorrad Central in Dalkeith, was a large cardboard crate containing the new bike, which should arrive in my garage any day now….can’t wait!
